Anna Sui’s Fall-Winter 2012 collection was a smashing success! Channeling an image of swinging London in the 60’s, the crashing colors of blue, fuschia and orange overwhelmed the stark white runway and mellow music (the music played at the show is not the same music played in the above video).

Recurring ideas in the collection are the use of metallic jacquard (always a Sui staple), traditional English check prints, crushed velvet, capes and open coats, fluorescent tights and most notably, exclusively fake fur. We see the return of animal-motif hats with the rather comical bejewelled owl hat (and matching gloves, no less). Tassels are abounds, be they adorning the end of a thin wrap belt or the highly-anticipated Coach collaboration bags. The season’s sunglasses take on a decidedly more dandy silhouette, with completely circular frames.

It’s impossible to overstate how important it is to see this collection in motion — static, frontal images simply do not capture the elements that make this collection magical. The tassels, fabrics and coats capture every movement from the heaviest steps to the gentlest of gestures. Appropriate for the level of energy Sui’s clothes always radiate in their colours and patterns, the pieces feel alive.

The Hush Puppies collaboration appears to have come to an end — Fiorentini + Baker and Ballin provide shoes as usual. There is also a new collaborator — a company called Ugglebo — who provided the clogs for the collection.

The beauty styling, in tune with the collection, is wild and colorful, with shocking blue eyeliner and harlequin-esque dots under the dyes. The hair is more restrained than the previous view collections — the front is uniform with a severe low part, with every unnecessary strand tucked neatly behind in a ponytail. The result is sleek and mod.

Sure to be one of the more divisive collections Sui has released over the past few years, this season says farewell to trends and delivers an aesthetic clearly targeted towards her hardcore fans. I for one am thrilled.
